PUBLIC ART AIMS TO TRANSFORM CAPITAL
Tokyo’s waterfront is about to become a stage for contemporary art.
I’ve written about the “Tokyo Atlas International Art Exhibition” (Oct. 10 to Dec. 20), the centerpiece of Arte Tokyo, the city’s first large-scale urban art festival. Free and open to all, it spreads across more than 750,000 sq. m in three Tokyo Bay districts: Daiba, Tennoz Isle and Aomi. Works by artists from around the world will be installed in outdoor spaces rather than white cube museums.
I interviewed Akiko Miki, one of the event’s artistic directors and director of the Naoshima New Museum of Art, about how the artworks were chosen and how each area’s history and character shaped the selection.
