My third article as a contributing writer Manami Tominaga has been published in The Japan Times’ ArtsJP supplement, available both in print and online. The article explores how the Osaka Expo serves as a platform for showcasing Japan’s vision for an inclusive society and breaking down accessibility barriers.

With the Expo 2025’s central theme of “Designing Future Society for Our Lives” and its sub-themes of “Saving Lives,” “Empowering Lives,” and “Connecting Lives,” this world exposition presents a unique opportunity to examine how cultural institutions and public spaces can become more welcoming to all visitors. Through interviews with accessibility advocates, pavilion designers, and visitors with diverse needs, the piece investigates how the expo’s commitment to universal design principles reflects Japan’s broader efforts toward social inclusion.

Writing this piece allowed me to explore themes I’ve long been passionate about, particularly the intersection of cultural access and social equity. I’m grateful to have shared these important voices and highlighted the meaningful work being done to ensure that Japan’s vision of the future truly includes everyone.
